OneCAD Solutions Ltd., Markham, ON, Canada – January 22, 2009
OneCAD Solutions shares its concept of the “Lean Design Partnership” with Canadian Manufacturers.
A strategy for SME’s (small to medium sized enterprises) to be more competitive in today’s economy.
Bleak, severe, disastrous… the list goes on to describe the current economy. Yet, OneCAD Solutions Ltd. of Markham, ON, an engineering design services company and some of its clients remain optimistic about Canada’s manufacturing potential by implementing what Neil Thomas, OneCAD Solutions’ President describes as the “Lean Design Partnership”.
Though manufacturers are cutting back, they still need to strengthen their market potential and find new ways to be competitive, stay profitable and win new work.
As Thomas explains, “The idea is very simple. Partnerships are not only for large companies. Many SME’s only think of forming a business partnership once they have won the work, when they are scrambling to deliver. They risk not meeting their deadlines and losing valuable margin. Some of our manufacturing clients are more proactive with what we now describe as a Lean Design Partnership. It starts by including their partners upfront in their quoting process. The manufacturer then has a greater capacity to deliver faster and yet they can do so without new capital investments, without new staff commitments and without extra overhead. They can quote more jobs and perhaps larger jobs than in the past. It’s keeping them competitive without upfront costs and with a better potential of closing more sales. We call it Lean as it creates more value with less work and ultimately benefits the end customer of the manufacturer”.
In OneCAD’s case, the Lean Design Partnership physically engages when the manufacturer wins the new contract. The manufacturer’s staff concentrates on the engineering and implementing their proprietary knowledge. OneCAD becomes an extension of their design team helping them get their CAD (computer aided design) work and drawings out to the factory floor. The manufacturer adds more value to their end customer as they improve their delivery of being on time, on spec and on budget.
Thomas further adds, “We believe that Lean Design Partnerships can be applied to a number of different industries. Many large companies already have them in the form of an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) team agreement involving multiple partners that gives a turn-key solution. We want to educate small to medium sized companies that engaging in this kind of partnership early in the sales process is a better way of doing business. Partnerships are not only the realm of the bigger players, the team approach gives all companies a better chance to succeed. It just makes sense”.
As Donald Rhodenizer, VP Project Coordinator of Reinforced Plastics Systems, Mahone Bay, NS explains “Knowing we have OneCAD’s professional people available to help us, will enable us to quote faster deliveries than some of our competition.”
